High-tech fan clutches made by SACHS reduce the fan speed by activating or deactivating the fan, depending on the current cooling requirements. That way, they reduce irritating noises and help to save fuel. With a low engine load, the head wind often suffices to dissipate the waste heat from radiator and engine. In this case, a low fan speed or even zero fan speed is sufficient. With rising temperature in the engine compartment and decreasing speed, there is an increasing risk of engine overheating and heat accumulation. This is for instance the case during hill drives or in stop-and-go traffic. Now, the fan clutch is activated and the fan ensures a sufficient air flow through the radiator.
